Set up Microsoft Authenticator on your new phone
What you need
- Your new phone with the Microsoft Authenticator app installed (from App Store or Google Play)
- A computer where you can log in
- (Optional) Text or call verification set up, or a backup from your old phone
Step 1 – Install Authenticator
- On your new phone, install Microsoft Authenticator from the app store.
- If you backed up your old Authenticator, choose 'Restore from backup'.
Step 2 – Open Security Info
Step 3 – Add your new phone
- Click 'Add sign-in method' ® 'Authenticator app' ® 'Add'.
- A QR code will appear on your computer.
- On your phone, open Authenticator ® tap '+' ® 'Work or school account' ® 'Scan QR code'.
- Scan the code with your phone.
- Approve the test notification.
Step 4 – Set as default
- On the Security info page, change 'Default sign-in method' to 'Microsoft Authenticator – notification'.
Step 5 – Remove your old phone
- On the Security info page, find your old phone and delete it.
Step 6 – Turn on Backup
- On your new phone, open Authenticator ® Settings ® switch Cloud backup ON.
Step 7 – Test it
- Open a private browser window, sign in, and check that you get an approve notification on your new phone.

- If you only had the Authenticator app set up and nothing else, contact IT for a reset.
